How does a multiple birth actually occur?
When two eggs are fertilized, you have fraternal twins, and when one egg is fertilized and splits, you have identical twins.
The older the woman, the greater the chance of a multiple pregnancy. Genetics also play a role on the mother's side. Are you a twin yourself, or are there many in your family? Then there's a chance you too are carrying twins or multiples!
Did you know that triplets are usually fraternal? But there's also a chance you're carrying two identical twins, and your third comes from a different egg. Crazy idea, right? In the Netherlands, about 3,000 twins have been born in recent years. The chance that you (without a family history) will have twins is 1 in 80/90. Multiple births are very rare.
Can you tell you're pregnant with twins?
Several women claim to notice the difference, from one child, two, or even more. Their belly naturally grows faster. They also feel more nauseous, dizzy, and tired much more quickly.
