A mother is so much more than just a mother. You're also a professional multitasker, a skilled door cleaner, a full-time tidyer, and a walking coat rack! But do you know the following facts? Read along in our latest blog!
Women are becoming mothers at an increasingly older age
Approximately 487 children are born in the Netherlands each day, of which an average of 245 are boys and 233 are girls. Women in the Netherlands have their first child at an average age of 30.3 years. This is considerably later than in 1970, when the average age of women having their first child was 24.3 years. That's a difference of six years. Incidentally, fathers are even slightly older than mothers. In 2021, they became fathers of their first child at an average age of 32.8 years.

Mother's Day
Did you know that Mother's Day has only been a tradition in the Netherlands since 1925? Anna Jarvis came up with the idea after her mother passed away. Her mother cared deeply for others. So Anna came up with a beautiful way to honor her mother and all other mothers. That's how Mother's Day came to be.
Grandma and Grandpa Day
We all know Mother's Day. But there's also Grandma and Grandpa Day. You might not know that. In the Netherlands, this day has existed since 2004 and is celebrated on June 4th. In America, it's been celebrated since 1978, every first Sunday of September. Marian McQuade created this day to encourage young people to have more respect for their elders. And to connect lonely seniors with children who could use a (extra) grandpa or grandma.
Millions of mothers
There were approximately 4.8 million mothers in the Netherlands in 2017. That's a lot, isn't it? And there are more mothers than fathers in the world. Women live longer than men. Men are also more likely to remain childless than women and have children later in life. There were 4.1 million fathers in the Netherlands in 2017.
An old-fashioned fact
Yes, we know. It's old-fashioned to credit moms with cooking dinner. But from experience, we know it's still quite common for women to do the cooking. Besides, it's just fun to share a fact about moms who cook :) Research in England found that women rotate between nine dishes each week. Despite our shelves full of cookbooks, we often fall back on the same recipes. No problem at all! As long as your kids eat them and there's no nagging at the dinner table. Right?!
